Unbox the Printer

  1. Open the HP Photosmart 5520 printer box by cutting open the sealing tape with a box cutter carefully.
  2. Fold the box’s flaps back.
  3. The HP Photosmart 5520 setup Getting Started guide is located on the top. Take it out and set it aside.
  4. There is also the multi-lingual user guide, HP Advanced Photo paper, installation CD, power cable, ink cartridges, and the HP 5520 printer inside the box.
  5. Set the HP 5520 box on its side and use the plastic bag handles to slide the printer out.
  6. Detach the packaging material from the sides of the Photosmart printer and discard them.
  7. Remove the plastic bag, tapes, and films from the HP 5520 printer.
  8. Lift the Photosmart machine’s top(scanner) cover and take the plastic bag off. 
  9. Open the scanner assembly and peel off the packing tape from there.
  10. Close the scanner assembly.
  11. Flip open the input tray and pull the tray out. Remove the tape stuck to the input tray and then push the tray back into the printer.

Power Connection

  1. Twist the twist tie anticlockwise to remove it from the power cord.
  2. Attach the power cord to the HP 5520 machine’s Power port and the wall outlet.
  3. Press the HP 5520 machine’s Power button located on its control panel.
  4. After initialization is complete, tap English-->Yes.
  5. Tap USA --> Yes.
  6. Select Setup.

Cartridge Installation

  1. Raise the HP 5520 machine’s scanner assembly.
  2. Take the white plastic cartridge placeholder out of the printer and discard it.
  3. Unpack the HP ink cartridges.
  4. Peel off the orange tab to remove the plastic packaging material from the HP black ink cartridge.
  5. There should be an orange plastic part on the black ink cartridge. Twist it anticlockwise to remove it from the cartridge.
  6. Place this black ink cartridge in its slot on the HP 5520 printer and press it until it locks into place.
  7. Install the other three cartridges in the same way.
  8. Close the HP 5520 machine’s scanner assembly.
  9. Slide the paper input tray out and push the paper width guides outward.
  10. The HP 5520 machine displays a message stating that genuine ink cartridges have been installed. Tap OK.

Print Head Alignment

  1. The printer prompts you to load paper.
  2. Load a paper stack in the input tray and slide the edge width guides toward the paper stack to secure it.
  3. Slide the paper tray back into the HP 5520 printer until it clicks into place.
  4. Tap OK-->OK.
  5. The HP 5520 printer prints an alignment page.
  6. Place the alignment page face-down on the scanner with its top right-corner aligned with the top right corner of the scanner glass. Close the scanner lid.
  7. Tap OK.
  8. Tap OK when alignment is completed.
  9. You can connect the HP Photosmart 5520 setup to the computer by using the HP software on your computer or the printer buttons.

Install HP Photosmart 5520 Driver

Auto-Printhead Cleaning

  1. Power on the HP 5520 printer.
  2. Go to the HP 5520 printer’s control panel.
  3. Select Settings --> Tools --> Scroll through the list to locate the Clean Printhead option.
  4. Wait until the HP 5520 printer’s printhead cleaning is completed.

Manual Printhead Cleaning

  1. While the HP 5520 printer is powered on, raise its scanner assembly.
  2. The HP machine’s cartridge carriage stops moving after a few moments.
  3. Unplug the HP Photosmart 5520 printer’s power cable from the rear Power port.
  4. Take out all the HP ink cartridges and set them aside.

  7. Dip another paper towel in isopropyl alcohol and dab the nozzles in the printhead with the paper towel.
  8. Dab the ink nozzles in the printhead with a dry paper towel.
  9. Move the print cartridge carriage to the right side of the printer.
  10. Install all the HP ink cartridges.
  11. Lower the scanner assembly.
  12. Attach the HP power cable to the 5520 printer and the wall outlet.
  13. Load paper in the HP Photosmart machine’s input tray.
  14. Adjust the paper width guides to secure the paper.
  15. On the HP 5520 printer’s control panel, select Settings --> Tools --> Clean Printhead.
  16. Check the test page to find out whether another cleaning cycle is required.

Fixed: HP Photosmart 5520 won't Print Black

  1. Power on the HP 5520 printer.
  2. On the computer that is connected to the HP 5520 printer, open the HP printer software and check the ink levels.
  3. If the HP Photosmart 5520 setup is low on black ink, replace the black ink cartridge.
  4. Open its scanner assembly and wait until the cartridge carriage stops moving.
  5. Remove the black ink cartridge and check whether its ink nozzle is blocked.
  6. Likewise, check the printhead nozzle to see whether there is a blockage. If so, clean these blocks.

  1. Download the HP Print & Scan Doctor on your computer and run it as an administrator.
  2. Follow the solution recommended by the software to fix the connection issue.
  3. Power off the HP Photosmart 5520 printer, computer, and networking devices.
  4. Unplug the power and network interface cables.
  5. After a few minutes, attach the power cables to the devices and then attach the network interface cables.
  6. Power on these devices and check whether the connection issue is resolved.
  7. Uninstall the HP 5520 printer software from your computer.
