HP Laserjet Pro m402dn Setup
  • Keep the HP Laserjet Pro M402N printer box on a table and cut the sealing tape.
  • Pull the flaps back to access the M402N accessories.
  • Take the HP Laserjet Pro M402dn setup CD, multi-language support guide, power cable, and USB cable out of the box.
  • Set the box on its slide and slowly flip it such that it is upside down.
  • Pull the box over the printer and set it aside.
  • Since the M402N printer is now resting on the styrofoam cap in a vertical orientation, reposition it so that its base rests on the table.
  • Remove the styrofoam cap and discard it.
  • Remove the packing tapes and take the M402N printer out of the plastic bag.
  • Discard the bag.
  • Peel off all the packing tapes from the M402N machine and discard them.
  • Grasp the slot on the front side of the Laserjet Pro M402N printer and pull the paper tray out completely.
  • Slide the front and side paper width guides to the extreme positions.
  • Load an A4 stack and adjust the paper width guides to secure it.
  • Reattach the paper tray to the M402N printer.
  • Unpack the HP power cord, remove the twist tie.
  • Uncoil the cable and plug it to the M402N printer & wall outlet.
  • Connect any Ethernet cable to the M402N printer and wall Ethernet port.
  • Power on the HP Laserjet Pro M402dn setup by pressing the Power button on the front side of the machine and wait until it initializes.
  • Peel off the protective film from the control panel.
  • Scroll to the English option by using the arrow keys.
  • Confirm by selecting Yes.
  • Similarly, set the location.
  • Set the default setting to ‘Self-Managed’ and press OK. 
  • Install the M402N printer driver to complete the rest of the setup.

HP Laserjet Pro M402N Driver Installation Guide

  • Open the M402N driver that you downloaded from the manufacturer’s site.
  • The HP M402N software installer self-extracts, and the HP Installer window opens.
  • Check whether the M402N software packages shown on the screen are required and then click the Next button. (You can choose what packages can be installed by clicking the ‘Customize’ button.)
  • Left-click the T&C agreement checkbox and then click Next.
  • When prompted, connect the M402N printer and computer by using the USB cable provided in the box.
  • Follow the M402N software installer’s prompts to install, configure, and complete the M402N installation.

How to Replace Ink Cartridge in HP Laserjet Pro M402N?

  • Press the door release button located on the HP Laserjet Pro M402DN setup’s right side.
  • Lower the front door and take the old HP toner cartridge out of the M402N printer.
  • Unpack the new HP toner cartridge.
  • Shake the M402N toner cartridge back and forth to redistribute the toner.
  • Slide the new HP toner cartridge into the M402N printer.
  • Raise the front door to return it to its original position.

  • Make sure that your HP Laserjet Pro M402DN setup is powered on and connected to a power source directly.
  • Ensure that your smartphone/tablet is connected to the Wi-Fi network to which the M402N is going to be connected.
  • If there is a USB cable connected to the M402N printer, disconnect it and connect it only when prompted.
  • Select the Set Up option and press OK.
  • Go to the ‘Network Setup’ option and then go to the ‘Restore Network Settings’ option.
  • The M402N printer now enters the setup mode.
  • Enable Bluetooth on your Android/iOS smart device.
  • Go to the Play Store and download the HP Smart app.

  • The Connect Printer to Wi-Fi screen appears. Enter the Wi-Fi passphrase and then tap Continue.
  • The M402N printer is connected to Wi-Fi. Tap Continue.
  • The ‘Checking printer status’ screen appears on the HP Smart screen.
  • After the ‘Enjoy HP Account’ message appears on the app screen, tap the ‘three-dot’ button(menu button) at the top. Tap Skip.
  • Tap Continue.
  • Tap the checkbox on the HP Print Service Plugin window and then tap Start.
  • Select Not Right Now.
  • On your M402N control panel, navigate to Set Up --> Reports --> Network Configuration Page.
  • The M402N printer prints the page with all the network configuration details.
  • Send print jobs from your smart device to the M402N printer over the wireless network.

How to Print Envelopes on HP Laserjet Pro M402N?

  • Power on the M402N printer.
  • Set the envelope stack on the M402N machine’s tray 1 and secure it with the edge width guides.
  • Make sure that you load the envelope stack short-end first with the printable side facing up. The postage end of the envelope should be away from you and towards the printer input slot.
  • Open the text document containing the data to be printed on the envelope.
  • Select Print.
  • Choose M402N from the Printer drop-down list.
  • Go to the Paper Size drop-down list and choose the envelope size.
  • Choose ‘Envelope’ from the Paper Size drop-down list.
  • Set ‘Manual Feed’ in the ‘Paper Source’ drop-down list.
  • Click OK --> OK to begin printing on the envelope.

How to Print Double-Sided on HP Laserjet Pro M402N?

The HP M402N printer supports manual duplexing. Here’s how you can enable it.

  • On your computer, open the document viewer application and open the document to be printed.
  • Ensure that the HP M402N printer is powered on.
  • Return to the application and select the Print option.
  • Set the M402N printer as the printer for the print job from the Printer drop-down list.
  • Navigate to the Finishing tab and select the ‘Print on both sides(manually) option.
  • Set the pages to be printed.
  • Select OK.
  • The first set of pages that you chose will be printed.
  • Take them out of the output bin, flip them, and place them in Tray

Select the option on the machine’s control panel to print the rest of the pages.

  • Detach the tray 2 from the M402N printer.
  • Take the jammed paper out of the paper tray and discard it.
  • Secure the paper stack correctly by using the rear width guide.
  • Check whether all four corners of the paper stack are flat.
  • Attach the tray to the printer and slide it in completely.
  • Lower the M402N printer’s front door and take the toner cartridge out.
  • Raise the jam access cover and take the jammed paper out.
  • Reinstall the M402N toner cartridge and close the cover and the door.

Fixed: HP Laserjet Pro M402N Offline Issue

  • Check whether the Wi-Fi network to which the HP M402N printer is connected is working.
  • Connect a smart device to the Wi-Fi network and check whether you are able to access the internet on the device.
  • If there is no connection, set the connection right and then find out whether the offline issue is resolved.
  • Go to the M402N printer’s icon located in the Devices and Printers folder of the computer’s Control Panel folder.
  • Right-click it and click the Properties option.
  • Open ‘See what’s printing’ and clear the printing queue.
  • Return to this menu and click ‘See what’s printing’ --> Printer --> Deselect ‘Use Printer Offline.’
  • Make sure that the ‘Set as Default Printer’ option is selected.
  • Download and use the HP Print & Scan Doctor to resolve connection issues.
  • If the HP Laserjet Pro M402DN setup continues to be offline, uninstall and reinstall the M402N printer driver.

  • After clicking Print and setting the printing preferences, make sure that you click OK to begin printing.
  • Ensure that the paper setting on the printer and computer are the same in order to avoid printing issues. 
  • If the printing attributes such as paper size or paper type which have been set in the printing preferences do not match the supported attributes in the paper tray being used for printing, this issue can occur.
  • To resolve this, make sure that the attributes such as paper size and source set in the printing preferences are compatible with the paper input tray that is being used.
  • Go to the manufacturer’s support site and download the latest M402N driver for your computer. Install it and check whether the M402N printing issue persists. 
  • Remove the jammed paper, if any, from the M402N printer, power off the printer, and then power it on. The printing issue should no longer persist.

How to Reset HP Laserejt Pro M402DN Printer?

  • Power on the M402N printer and let it initialize.
  • While the M402N printer is still on, disconnect the power cable.
  • Detach the HP power cable from the wall outlet as well.
  • Wait for approximately a minute.
  • Reattach the power cord to the M402N printer and then to the wall outlet.
  • The HP M402N printer should power on automatically.
  • If not, power on the HP Laserjet Pro M402DN setup. The M402N is now reset.
