Canon Pixma iX6840 is a high performing wireless printer that also supports mobile printing. The FINE print head technology used in this printer makes the printing fast. The printer needs to be set up before you operate it. Continue reading the below steps to Canon Pixma IX6840 Setup.


Step-1: Unpack the Printer

  1. Unbox the printer, place it on a stable surface, and look for the other printer accessories in the carton.
  2. Keep the printer accessories such as ink tanks, power cord, installation CD, and user guides safely for later use.
  3. Remove all the packaging tapes and protective materials from the printer.
  4. Lift the top cover and remove the protective materials from the inside.

Step-2: Power Connection

  1. Once the packing materials have been removed, turn on the printer by connecting the power cord to it.
  2. Make sure the power light glows on the printer. If the orange light blinks, then restart the printer.

Step-3: Ink Tank Installation

  1. Canon provides five different ink tanks such as Cyan, Black, Yellow, Magenta, and Pigment Black.
  2. Open the top cover and wait till the print head moves to the original position.        
  3. Now, unpack a new ink tank, remove the orange protective film and remove the cap.
  4. Check the color code of the tank, insert it into the respective holder in the printer, and make sure it locks into position.
  5. If you have installed the tanks properly, you could see the indicator light glowing on the printer. If the indicator light does not glow, then remove the cartridge and reinstall it. 
  6. Similarly, Canon Pixma IX6840 Setup and install the other ink tanks and close the top cover.

Step-4: Feed Paper

  1. Slowly pull the paper support slightly to support the paper.
  2. Gradually open the front cover of the printer and draw out the paper output tray.
  3. Slide the paper guides to the ends of the tray.
  4. Neatly arrange a stack of paper and place them in the center of the rear tray in the portrait orientation such that the print side faces outwards.
  5. Now, align the paper guides to the paper edges, but see that you do not bend or fold it.

Step-5: Network Cable Connection

  1. Skip this step if the printer is to be set up over a wireless network or using the USB cable connection method.
  2. But if you wish to establish a wired network connection, connect an Ethernet cable from the router’s LAN port to the printer.

Step-6: Software Installation

    Driver for  Printer

    The printer driver helps you to control and manage the printer operations from your computer easily. It is available on the software CD, and it can be downloaded from the official Canon site. Read the below steps to download the driver to your computer.

    1. On the computer’s default web browser, visit the official Canon website and search for the printer model using the search icon at the upper right end.
    2. When you are on the printer’s support page, click the Drivers & Downloads tab.
    3. Choose your OS type from the Operating System drop-down menu, select the preferred language, and click the Download button beside the recommended driver package.
    4. After the download, run the installer file on your computer and Canon Pixma IX6840 Setup the printer connection.

  1. Go to the official Canon website from a browser and find the printer model.
  2. On the support page of the printer, select the Manual tab. Now a list of guides & manuals will be displayed.
  3. Find the required manual, click Select beside the name of the manual, and finally click View or Download.


On Windows:

  1. You can either use the Canon Pixma IX6840 Setup and installation CD or downloaded installer to install the printer driver on your computer.
  2. Open the driver installer file, and if the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Yes to continue.
  3. When the printer setup window opens up, set the language and select Next.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the .NET Framework installation and choose the software to be installed.
  1. Follow the guided instructions, select Complete, and then click Next to complete the setup.
  2. Read the Extended Survey Program. You can either accept or deny it and then print a test page for verifying the connection setup.
  3. Click Exit once the installation is complete.  


  1. Turn your wireless router On, connect your computer to router, and note down the network name and password of the wireless network.
  2. Ensure the printer is turned on and then double-click the installer file on your computer to begin the setup.
  3. In the setup window, select the installation language and click Next.
  4. Following that, choose Network Connection and then select Wireless Connection.
  5. Click Next to proceed with the wireless connection setup.
  6. Select the Connect to the network option in the next window.
  7. Under Setup Procedure Selection, choose Cableless setup.
  8. Now, go to the printer and hold the printer’s Wi-Fi button until the power indicator light blinks twice. Release the button when the power light on the printer flashes twice.
  9. Return to the computer and click the Next button.
  10. Read the instruction displayed on the Canon Pixma IX6840 Setup wizard.
  1. Select your place of residence or country and choose the software for installation from the displayed list.
  2. Following that, read the license agreement and click Yes to accept the terms & policies.
  3. Click Next and then select Redetect in the Check Printer Settings window.
  4. If the software cannot detect the wireless network, click the checkbox near ‘Set up the network connection via USB’ and connect the USB cable.
  5. When the network is detected, the network name will be shown on the screen. Now click Complete.
  6. When the printer head alignment screen shows up, click Next and again click Next on the following screen.
  7. Register the printer using your Canon account, accept or deny the Extended Survey Program, and click Exit to close the setup window.


If the print head has become old or damaged, you can replace it using the below-mentioned steps.

  1. Keep the printer turned on. Carefully slide out the inner cover and open the top cover.
  2. You can see the print head moving. Wait till it stops moving and then remove all the ink tanks slowly without touching the print head lock lever.
  3. Next, lift the print head lock lever and take out the used print head.
  4. Unpack the new print head, remove all protective materials from it, and place it in the print head holder. Make sure you hear the click sound.
  5. Close the print head lock lever and carefully install the ink tanks one by one.
  6. After Canon Pixma IX6840 Setup and installing all the ink tanks, check if the indicator light glows.
  7. Slide the inner cover slowly inside the printer and close the top cover.


If the ink level in ink tanks is low, replace them with the new ones. To check if the ink tank level is low, examine if the ink tank indicator light is off. In case the light is off, then replace the ink tank as explained below.

  1. Keep the printer turned on, gently slide the inner cover outside, and lift the top cover.
  2. Let the print head move to the original position and become idle.
  3. Remove those ink tanks having low ink, but do not touch the other printer parts.
  4. Unpack the new ink tank, remove all the protective materials, and keep the tank in a position such that the cap remains on top.
  5. Next, insert the tank into its holder and see if it is locked in a position. The indicator light should be glowing.
  6. Install the other ink tanks and close the top cover.

  1. If you are a Windows user, open the Devices and Printers window from the Control Panel. Right-click the printer model name and select the See what’s printing option.
  2. Now, click the Printer menu in the new window and deselect the Use Printer Offline option.
  3. Similarly, open the Services window on your computer, right-click the Print Spooler menu, and select Restart.
  4. If ‘Restart’ is grayed, then click Start.
  5. Open the Properties window of Spooler, set the Startup type as Automatic, and save the settings.
  6. Check if the network and power cables to the printer are connected securely.


  1. Power off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  2. Open the top cover of the printer.
  3. Slowly remove the clogged paper from the printer.
  4. If the paper is stuck beneath the print head, slide the print head to an end and use both the hands to remove the clogged paper.
  5. Do not try to pull hard, because if the paper is torn into pieces, then it would be difficult to remove the paper pieces.
  6. After successful removal, close the top cover.


  1. To avoid the paper feed problem, do not load damaged, folded, or crippled paper in the tray. Always use dry and neat paper for printing.
  2. If the printer’s paper settings are incorrect, then change the settings corresponding to the paper loaded in the input tray.
  3. Check if there are any paper pieces inside the printer and remove them. 
  4. Clean the paper feed rollers regularly using a lint-free dry cloth.


  1. Reset the printer only when required because resetting will erase all the settings and restore the default factory settings. If the printer is reset, you have to configure the settings from again from the beginning.
  2. Now, to reset the Canon Pixma IX6840 Setup printer, hold the Resume or Cancel button till the power indicator light blinks nine times.
